Putter Fitting

Tour players care more about putting and their putter than the normal player, do you know why? They love money.”

Curtis Strange

More than 44% of our shots in a round of golf come with the putter.   Golfers don’t think anything about dropping $400 on a driver, and now most even know how important it is to get fit.

But when it comes to a new putter, couple practice strokes, eye it, possibly half a dozen putts on the practice green and “off the rack” and in the bag it goes.

Let me share some valuable putter information with you.

LENGTH: 35” is standard, but we find more and more custom fits are short of standard, and this has an affect on LIE (but more on that later). Custom fit length is crucial. Length of the shaft if proper will encourage you to get into a good posture.  Proper posture allows for a lack of tension in your neck, back, shoulders and arms.  The length of the putter can also get your eyes into the optimum position.

LIE: This is the relationship between the center of the shaft and the sole of putter. Lie (as is the case with all clubs) directly influences the line the ball is hit on. Too upright and the ball goes left, too flat and the ball goes right (for right handed golfers, think opposite for leftys). Lies are affected by your set up (for good or bad). We will use lie angle adjustments along with shaft length to get a student into a posture in which they will perform best.

LOFT: “YES” of course putters have loft. 3-4 degrees is industry standard. Loft assures our putts of being on top if the green, yet without getting airborne, so our putts roll smoothly without bouncing. This is crucial to keeping the putt on line, once it starts bouncing the ball has a higher percentage of bouncing off line. Address position, and position both at set up and impact all play an important role in determining loft for a golfer. We have fit as little as 1 degree and as much as 8 degrees.

FACE BALANCE: Toe down, mid-hang, and face balance. These are determined by the players stroke: strong arc players would be more consistent with toe down, slight arc strokes work better with a mid-hang and a straight back and straight through putter will fair better with a face balance. Your stroke can be determined during the Fitting process.

HEAD WEIGHT: Options for putter weight are now available. While personal feel is a major part of this, so too, is the speed of the greens you regularly play, faster greens usually have heavier and slower greens favor lighter weights. Average putter head weights have traditionally been between 320-400 grams and we now have more options than ever.

GRIP SIZE: Dramatic changes just in the last 5 years, mostly due to Super Stroke are dominating putters these days at all levels; PGA, LPGA, Champions Tours, college, amateurs.   The larger grips contribute to less hands involved with the stroke and more arms and shoulders, that’s a good thing. Preference can be identified during the fitting process.

  1. Custom Fit Putters cost more: FALSE Custom fit clubs do NOT cost 1 penny more.
  1. I fit off the rack: FALSE Less than 2% of golfers fit off the rack.
  1. Custom Fit clubs take too long to get: FALSE Custom Fit Putters are delivered within 7 days, sometimes sooner.

We believe in letting the product prove itself, in other words, we think you should come in with an open mind, hit shots and let the product prove it.

We believe in education and training and experience.

We believe technology, but we also believe in feel…feel is the one thing we do not fit, that is up to the player.

We believe that less than 2% of golfers fit off the rack

Properly fit wedges provide players with precise distance gaps in their wedges. A well fit wedge set will enable a player to hit more full shots.

Bounce and Grind selection is a critical step in wedge fitting. Choosing the correct grind based on a golfers swing type and course conditions will improve turf interaction and shot making consistency.

Properly fit wedges will maintain or improve a players ‘go to’ shots, while improving the weakest shots in their short game. Leading to lower scores.

We start every fitting with a player and equipment evaluation. For wedge fitting, start with the 9-iron and pitching wedge loft, lie & shaft specs.

Tour pros call it hitting their number. The first shots during a wedge fitting will be for distance gapping and wedge set loft selection.

Bounce and Grind fitting begins with full swings during the distance gap fitting, and continues with shots around the green. We evaluate turf interaction, divots and ball flight to determine the right bounce, grind, and lie angles.

The final step is to hit all of the necessary short game shots, including pitches, chips and bunker shots with multiple grinds. These shots will validate your preferred wedges from the full swing section of the fitting.

Selecting the right wedges is a multiple step process, including loft and distance gap fitting, bounce & grind fitting, and testing these wedges for shot versatility around the green.

Driver Fitting Guarantee

Come let us conduct your next fitting when you buy clubs. We do more fittings than anybody in the state and we never try to get you to buy something you do not need or that doesn’t fit you. We guarantee at least a 15 yard increase in your driver distance. This will come from one of three areas:

  1. A correctly fitted driver.
  2. Making a better swing.
  3. Increasing your flexibility and/or strength.

If all these areas are addressed correctly you will increase your driver distance by at least 15 yards. A player must be willing to commit to a lesson plan and or a TPI golf fitness program if the distance increase is not gained from simply the driver fitting. Our history of fittings over the last 5 years has been to get about 20-25 yards more distance for most of our students. And, occasionally we get as much as 50 yards!!How to buy golf clubs that fit your game.

Fitting fees are $150 but are FREE with a purchase.
It’s your shot, what are you going to do?

Our Custom Fitting Process

Step #1 – Oral interview.

This would provide information about your shot tendencies, practice habits and your goals for your golf game. You would also want the instructor to know what your worst shot shapes are.

Step #2 – Fitting for length of irons.

If you are playing with the incorrect length you will have more off center hits resulting in a significant loss of distance. Test results have proven that when hitting a six iron a 1″ off center hit costs you about an 8% loss of distance.

Step #3 – Fitting for the correct lie angle.

Playing with the incorrect lie angle will cause tremendous direction control problems. Test results have shown us that for each 2 degrees of incorrect lie angle the ball will be 20 feet off line! This will force you to compensate some way with your swing.

Step #4 – Fitting for shafts.

This is dependent on three things. The first two can be measured. One is club head speed. The faster you swing a club the heavier and firmer shaft you might need. The other factor to be measured is how much you load the shaft. This is the amount of flex you create in the shaft after you start your downswing. The third factor cannot be measured. That is how the shaft feels to the player. Some of this is dependent on observing the ball flight and some is just based on how the shaft feels in the players hands.

Step #5 – Grip size and material.

Grip size can be measured, but it also dependent on player feedback as to which size feels the best. The material is based strictly on the players preference – rubber, cord, ½ cord… there is only about 100 different choices.

Step # 6 – Set make up.

This has gotten to be a huge part of the fitting process. This would include what irons you need in your set. Most players have trouble hitting long irons. You would have a choice to get your set without a 2, 3 or 4 iron for instance. Get your set of irons with only a 5 through a SW. And, then fill in with some higher lofted fairway metals. Unlimited number of options here, whatever fits your game the best.

Step #7 – Wedge fitting.

This is the most complicated part of the fitting process. Fitting of wedges would include how much bounce you have on the sole of your sand and lob wedge. Generally you would want more bounce on your sand wedge in order to play from sand bunkers. How you hit your wedges from the fairway would also be a factor in the bounce. You would also need to make sure you have the right amount of loft differences in all of your wedges. Now, imagine trying to decide on these factors hitting from a mat! You don’t play golf from a mat so you cannot make fitting decisions from a mat.

Step #8 – Driver fitting.

There has never been a time when fitting your driver was more important. Drivers are vastly different depending on the manufacturer. Fitting for length is important as it is for irons. The incorrect length will cause off center hits which will result in a huge loss of distance. You would also need to know the the correct launch angle.
The correct launch angle can gain you as much as 30-40 yards of distance. Different drivers launch the ball at different angles. What you fit for in one driver may not be the same as it is for another. Outdoor ball flight is mandatory for driver fitting.
